As per the records, there are 917 glaciers in Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand, among them 238 are in Bhagirathi, 326 are in Alaknand, 264 in Kaliganga and 50 in Yamuna region. The sacred rivers of Uttarakhand originate from the glaciers and attract thousands of pilgrims every year with their religious importance. Holy River Ganga has Gangotri glacier as her origin and holy river Yamuna has Yamunotri glacier as her origin. Gangotri glacier is the biggest of all glaciers in Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand.

Among these, Gangotri and Yamunotri glaciers are situated nearby two of the Char Dham pilgrimages Gangotri and Yamunotri, paid visit by thousands of Hindu devotees every year from May to October but usually in between May and June and September and October as during the monsoon rain blocks the route. Recently this year, the year 2013 on 16th of June, Uttarakhand experienced a dreadful flood resulting to great human and material loss when Gangotri glacier melted. Almost everything except for the main temple of Kedarnath got drained, many bridges in Haridwar got flooded, the statue of lord Shiva in Rishikesh also flooded- Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand experienced a tremendous loss.
