Garhwal was formerly ruled by Shah Dynasty. When Nepali warriors won and took over the area under Prithvi Narayan Shah, the rule so forth was tyrannical as the Gorkhali ruler was very strict and people found it difficult to survive. Thus when British invaded India, they were invited to Garhwal to flee away the Nepali rule. The king of Garhwal gifted half of his land to British as gratitude when they won Tehri Garhwal over Nepali ruler. Thus the whole of Garhwal was divided into Tehri Garhwal and British Garhwal. Later after India’s independence, Tehri Garhwal and British Garhwal were merged into India and British Garhwal named Pauri Garhwal.
