Legend on Nainital Hill Station

Nainital Hill Station derives its name from lake Naini which is in the shape of eye (Naina). The lake is believed to be the eye of goddess Sati and nearby a temple Naini is devoted to goddess Sati (Parvati) is situated. The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas formed from the body parts of goddess Satidevi which fell down in various places of India and Nepal when lord Shiva unconsciously roamed around the Himvat Khanda of Bharat Barsa carrying Sati’s dead body. Goddess Satidevi had jumped in the Agni Kund (hearth) at Dakshyaprajapati’s Yagya Sthal, being unable to bear ill words of her father Dakshyaprajapati towards her husband lord Shiva. Satidevi had come to her father’s Yagya by her own will besides lord Shiva’s request not to participate and without the invitation from her parents. Attraction of internal and external tourists, and lovingly called Lake District, Nainital district houses eight other mesmerizing lakes besides Nainital. Bhimtal is the largest, 23Km, offering water sports facility.

Nainital Hill Station was established after British sugar merchant P. Barron happened to pass through Nainital.
